Tips for Vermont with your dog

• Check for ticks. Do a quick check after every walk in the woods or tall grass, from spring through fall.

• Know the park rules. Many state parks welcome leashed dogs, but rules differ for beaches and day-use areas, so check before you go.

• Hunting season. In the fall, and especially in November, put blaze orange on yourself and your dog when you're out in the woods.

• Mind the wildlife. Rural homes see deer, turkeys and the occasional porcupine. Keep dogs close at dawn and dusk.

• Read the house rules. Each home has its own pet policy and any fees are listed on its booking page.
